OrganOx
OrganOx is a medtech company pioneering normothermic liver perfusion with its metra device, improving transplant outcomes and increasing the use of donor organs worldwide.
About
OrganOx is a medical technology company based in Oxford, UK, that has developed metra—a groundbreaking device for preserving donor livers at normal body temperature for extended periods. The metra is commercially available within the EU and is transforming liver transplantation practices.
The company was founded in 2008 to commercialise technology invented by Professor Peter Friend and further developed by Professor Constantin Coussios at the University of Oxford. Its normothermic liver perfusion device is helping redefine the standards of donor organ preservation.

OrganOx is currently conducting a pivotal study in the US, as well as a trial at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, to assess the viability and transplant potential of marginal donor livers. To date, the OrganOx metra has supported over 2,000 liver transplants globally, increasing the utilisation of available donor organs.
The device allows clinicians to assess organ function in real time without compromising outcomes. In a European randomised clinical trial, metra-based preservation led to 50% fewer discarded organs compared to static cold storage and enabled 20% more successful liver transplants.
