Epoch Biodesign
Epoch Biodesign is a synthetic biology company that has developed enzymes to convert unrecyclable plastic waste into valuable, low-carbon chemicals using AI and advanced automation.
About
Epoch Biodesign supercharges billions of years of evolution to address humanity’s waste crisis. The company combines AI, robotic automation, and advanced synthetic biology to engineer enzymes that efficiently transform waste plastics into valuable chemicals. While the world drowns in plastic, Epoch is building the foundation of a waste-free future.
Founded in 2019 by Jacob Nathan—whose inspiration began with a high school science project exploring how microbes could break down plastic—the company has grown under his leadership to a team of 32 scientists and engineers based in London.
Epoch Biodesign develops natural solutions for unnatural problems, with a mission to scale and industrialise biology for a healthy planet. It has developed the first enzymes capable of transforming the hardest-to-recycle plastics into everyday chemicals. The company’s solution reduces dependence on fossil resources and lowers the carbon emissions of chemical production, all while cleaning up plastic waste.
