Sir, As one of the founders of Arm, a great British technology company, I was sad to hear of its impending takeover by SoftBank.

This is not out of some misplaced sense of nostalgia. Today I’m a partner at the venture firm Amadeus Capital, working with start-ups that hope to grow beyond Britain. But it is clear to me that Arm’s loss of independence is a loss to the UK.

Arm sold 15 billion microchips last year — more than Intel sold in its history. Its chips are in 95 per cent of the world’s mobile phones.
