Plastic Logic

Plastic Logic, a company spun out of the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge, is building an iconic electronic book reader (e-reader) using its unique plastic displays which are flexible, very light weight and much more robust than traditional glass-based displays. E-readers built with Plastic Logic technology, based on a proprietary manufacturing process, coupled with a reflective display medium such as E Ink, offer users a paper-like reading experience that previous e-reader products have not been able to provide.

Amadeus helped build Plastic Logic around the founders, Professor Richard Friend and Dr Henning Sirringhaus, recruiting the senior management team and helping the company find the right production and product strategies. Amadeus also helped assemble a strong syndicate of investors and a sympathetic network of shareholder companies with relevant experience in the industry, including Seiko-Epson, Dow Chemical and CDT.

Plastic Logic has received four rounds of funding totaling $150 million, with the most recent round of $100 million earmarked for a factory to produce its flexible display modules and to complete the design of its initial e-reader product. Amadeus has participated in each of the four rounds of financing and has been joined by Oak Investment Partners, Tudor Investment Corp, PolyTechnos Venture Partners and Intel Capital, among others. The most recent funding round, led by Oak and Tudor, was one of the largest in the history of European venture capital.
