Most car insurance premiums today are calculated simply by vehicle type, horsepower and price and the age, sex and location of the driver. Telematics applications give insurance companies a far broader range of tools to optimize their risks, strengthen their brand, and be more competitive. With telematics it becomes possible to apply new insurance models like "Pay-Per-Use" or "Pay-As-You-Drive".
Octo Telematics SpA is a wireless telematics systems and service provider for the insurance and automotive market. Founded in Rome in 2002, Octo Telematics has over 1,000,000 active subscribers, with subsidiaries and partners in Europe, USA, South America, and Asia. Octo Telematics offers other services like stolen vehicle recovery, automatic crash notification (eCall), crash-data recording, and real-time traffic data. In addition, Octo Telematics' unique infrastructure also supplies anonymous data about driver behaviour to support insurance actuaries with in-depth statistical information.
In June 2010, Amadeus participated in a €47.5m spin out of Octo Telematics from Metasystems, a North Italian technology conglomerate, alongside Montezemelo Partners and Rothschild Growth Capital. Andrea Traversone who joins the board of Octo Telematics says of the company “the declining cost of wireless modules and mobile data will significantly increase the adoption of telematics services by both enterprises and consumers. Octo Telematics is a market leader in this fast growing market”.
