A spin-out from Philips Research in 2006, Liquavista has developed and patented an innovative electro-wetting technology for use in mobile device display screens. The electro-wetting displays (EWDs) address the two main problems found in today’s mobile screen displays: poor readability in bright conditions and excessive power usage. Liquavista’s EWDs consume one-tenth the power of existing LCD screens of similar size, while providing a paper-like viewing experience in all lighting conditions.
Although the first market for Liquavista’s EWDs is mobile phones, the technology has applications across the spectrum from watches to large flat panel displays. Amadeus sees immense global potential for this technology, as it provides a competitively priced solution to the current problems faced by mobile display technologies.
Amadeus and GIMV, a Benelux-based venture firm, led a €12m Series ‘A’ financing round in Liquavista, which is based in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. They were joined by New Venture Partners, a global technology venture firm with offices in the US and the UK, which led the original spin-out financing.
